Everyday is a struggle

'Nobody loves me, they are better off without me'

A popular phrase by a depressed person feeling hopeless and alone. Death becomes a close friend and knocks at the door constantly with no fear. I was once a victim of depression and sometimes still hang on the fence. Losing the innocence of childhood into the guilt of the teenage years, i struggled with life putting up a fake smile i had practiced over the years.

Depression to me is a deep hollow pit that keeps dragging you in as you go deeper. Some people might think, how can you be depressed at such a young age? I have discovered that age is not a factor with depression. We all get depressed at a point in our lives over different circumstances like the death of a loved one, failure, stress of life and so many more but its how long we dwell in that state that becomes a problem. It gradually leads to attempt at suicide or actually dying by suicide and sadly most families are not so prone to therapy.

The worst feeling that holds a depressed person down is feeling no one will understand them; they will judge them and think they are crazy.

How do you know if you're depressed?
  • You feel worthless and guilty every time
  • You have frequent mood swings
  • You have a depressed mood almost all day
  • You feel restless
  • You have suicidal thoughts and probably tried it
  • You feel lonely and not loved
  • You feel 'empty'
  • You have negative thoughts
How to get over depression
  • Talk to someone

This is one of the first steps to overcoming depression. It could be a friend who understands, your parents or relatives or even a psychologist; it does not mean you are crazy.
  • Spend more time with people that value you and make you happy
  • Go out more and give yourself a treat.

If you can't go alone, go with a/or friend(s). Go buy your favorite ice cream, watch a movie, go shopping, go to a park. Relive the happy moments in your life.

  • Get involved
Have a schedule and be busy; exercise, volunteer, read a book, learn a skill or sport, listen to music that encourages and lifts your spirit.
  • Eat, Drink and Laugh

Eat healthy and eat well, it gives you strength. Drink water, it keeps your brain and body alive. Laugh even if you don't feel like it because laughter is the best therapy.
  • Set goals
Being depressed, you feel you can't accomplish anything or be good at anything. Set goals and start small, like learning to cook a new dish. There is no problem if you make a mistake, mistakes are there to make us better individuals. You can give yourself a treat for achieving your goal.
  • Think more positive and less negative
Make a conscious effort to think positive in whatever situation. If you think you're a failure, recall your times of success and the happiness you felt. Question your thoughts and with time you will heal.

You may be reading this post and it does not affect you directly but i could be talking about someone close to you. Get closer to them, talk to them, genuinely listen and be there when they need you. Go beyond your limits and show love, show them who they are through your eyes.
